Monthly Song Challenges for 2010

  • January 8 Leaving Write a song about the parting of the ways. It could be sad, wistful, happy, hopeful, anything.
  • February 6 Start a new song with the chorus
  • March 5 Major/Minor Write a song with the verses in the major key and the chorus in the minor key, or vice-versa.
  • April 3 Tax Time! Write a song about money. Money:
    (a) is funny sometimes, or
    (b) makes the world go round, or
    (c) talks.
  • May 1 Gimme a Fiver. May is the fifth month of the year. So...
    1. - write a song in 5/4 or 5/8 time or,
    2. - write a song using a pentatonic scale of your choice or,
    3. - write a song where each line begins with one of the five vowels or,
    4. - write a song which has 5 stanzas consisting of 5 lines each or,
    5. - write a song about a fist fight
  • June 5 Write a phone answering machine jingle for yourself
  • July 3 Tardiness. Bring a new song about being late.
  • August 7 Bad Man/Girl Ballad Bring a song about a villain, either fictional, or true to life.
  • September 4 Overheard phone call...a song in which the audience only hears half of a phone conversation, but still can fill in the rest of the story.
  • October 2 Where I Live Bring a song describing where you live, what you like or don't like about it.
  • November 6 Way Out West Bring a song that has a western theme to it.
  • December 4 Questions? Write a song that asks a question.

  • Jan. 3 2009 Song Challenge: "A fresh start" Bring a new song about starting all over.
  • Feb. 7 Song Challenge: "My Funny Valentine" Bring a love song to celebrate St. Valentine's Day
  • Mar. 7 Song Challenge: "Erin go braugh!" Bring a song inspired by something Celtic in honor of St. Patrick's Day
  • April 4 Song Challenge "April Fool" Bring a funny song
  • May 2 Song Challenge "Car Talk" Bring a song that is either about a car, or uses a car as a metaphore
  • June 6 Song Challenge: "Odd Meter" Bring a song in a meter you don't usually write in
  • July 4 Happy Independence Day! No Song Circle
  • Aug. 1 Song Challenge "In the good old summertime" a song about summer or that uses summer imagery, or metaphore.
  • Sept. 6 Happy Labor Day! Bring a new song about your job, or the world of work in general.
  • Oct. 3 Song Challenge: "When fall comes to the prairie" a song about autumn, or that uses autumnal imagery
  • Nov. 7 Song Challenge: "Sing along" a song with a sing along chorus, or refrain.
  • Dec. 5 Song Challenge: "Winter Song" a song about winter, or that uses winter as an image
