Monthly Song Challenges for 2012
- January "Yesterday" Tell us what happened. And if it isn't the truth, then it ought to be.
- February "Here Come Ol' Flattop" Bring a nonsense song.
- March "Savoy Truffle" Write a song about food; a favorite food, or one you can't stand the sight of.
- April "Here Comes the Sun" It's Spring. Bring a seasonal song.
- May "Michelle" Use a person's name as the title of your song.
- June "Taxman" Bring a protest song.
- July "Something" or anything from your notebook that you've never finished
- August "Let It Be" Bring a gospel song, or a spiritual song.
- September "Yer Blues" Bring a blues song.
- October "Eight Days A Week" Bring a song that uses a malaprop for the title.
- November "Twist And Shout" Write a two-and-a-half minute rocker.
- December "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" Write a song from the perspective of an inanimate object.

- Jan. 1 Happy New Year! No song Circle this month.
- Feb. 5 Current Events: Bring a song drawn from a current event.
- Mar. 5 Inanimate Object: Write a song from an object's point of view.
- Apr. 2 Write a song about going to the Dentist
- May 7 Write a song without using the word "the."
- June 4 Anacrusis: Have the first letter of each line in a song spell out a word or phrase.
- July 2 Include a key change
- Aug. 6 Include a change of meter
- Sept. 3 Write a song with the same title as a very famous song e.g. 'Yesterday', 'Stairway To Heaven' but make the song TOTALLY different
- Oct. 1 Write a song with at least part of the lyrics in a language other than your native tongue, the chorus for example.
- Nov. 5 You must mention the names of at least four cities in your song.
- Dec. 3 Open a book randomly, point to a word with your eyes closed, and use that word in the chorus.

sad, wistful, happy, hopeful, anything.

- March 5 Major/Minor Write a song with the verses in the major key and the
chorus in the minor key, or vice-versa.
- April 3 Tax Time! Write a song about money.
Money:
(a) is funny sometimes, or
(b) makes the world go round, or
(c) talks.
- May 1 Gimme a Fiver. May is the fifth month of the year. So...
- - write a song in 5/4 or 5/8 time or,
- - write a song using a pentatonic scale of your choice or,
- - write a song where each line begins with one of the five vowels
or,
- - write a song which has 5 stanzas consisting of 5 lines each or,
- - write a song about a fist fight
- June 5 Write a phone answering machine jingle for yourself
- July 3 Tardiness. Bring a new song about being late.
- August 7 Bad Man/Girl Ballad Bring a song about a villain, either fictional,
or true to life.
- September 4 Overheard phone call...a song in which the audience only hears half of
a phone conversation, but still can fill in the rest of the story.
- October 2 Where I Live Bring a song describing where you live, what you like or
don't like about it.
- November 6 Way Out West Bring a song that has a western theme to it.
- December 4 Questions? Write a song that asks a question.
